The M88A2 Hercules is a tracked, armored recovery vehicle, designed for lifting, extracting, and towing the heaviest combat vehicles. It plays a crucial role in supporting armored brigades and divisions, offering unmatched recovery capabilities. The vehicle can tow loads up to 63.5 tons, placing it at the top of its category globally.

The M88A2 crew consists of three people: a commander, an operator, and a mechanic, with additional space for four crew members of the recovered vehicle. The Hercules is equipped with hydraulic winches, and an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for backup power, and can perform fueling operations.

The Hercules boasts quite convincing specifications, with a power of 1,050 horsepower, and a maximum speed of 42 to 48 km/h. The M88A2 stands out for its ability to recover various heavy vehicles, including the Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tank, which Poland has acquired. Its lifting arm can lift up to 35 tons, and its main winch can tow vehicles up to 70 tons. These features make it indispensable for recovery operations in various environments.

The introduction of the M88A2 into the Polish army represents an important step in the modernization of its recovery capabilities. The versatility of the Hercules not only allows for the recovery of tanks but also other armored vehicles, thus increasing the operational flexibility of the Polish armed forces. This acquisition underscores Poland's commitment to maintaining a robust and adaptable defense force. However, with the recent elections in the country, it is questionable whether the new government will continue the policy of its predecessor.
