The modernization of the EE-9 Cascavel, renamed Cascavel NG (New Generation), was announced by the Brazilian Army on November 29, 2023. Led by the Força Terrestre consortium and supervised by Lieutenant Colonel Fábio Musetti de Souza, it is a key element of the Army's Strategic Program for Armored Forces, aiming to transform the Cascavel into an essential technological piece in the army's arsenal.
The modernization includes a complete overhaul of the chassis, turret, transmission, suspension, and 90 mm cannon. Replacing the engine with a more powerful and modern version, installing a tire pressure adjustment system adaptable to all types of terrain, and deploying state-of-the-art optronics integrated with a new fire control computer are some of the significant improvements. These innovations aim to increase the firing accuracy and overall operational efficiency of the vehicle.
The Cascavel NG prototype, presented with an improved automotive platform, is equipped with an optronics package for the commander and gunner, integrated with monitors, control panels, and joysticks. The main turret and the swivel and elevation mechanisms of the 90 mm cannon have been updated. The addition of a vision system with four cameras offers 360° situational awareness, allowing for enhanced and continuous environmental reconnaissance.
Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with an anti-tank missile launcher system (ATGM) in the turret and an air-conditioning system to improve crew comfort. The modernization also focuses on integrating a command and control (C2) computer to analyze sensors and read environmental parameters that interfere with mission execution, giving the commander greater operational awareness.
Collaboration with the national industry in this project is a crucial aspect, highlighting the importance of the defense industry for Brazil's sovereignty. General Fernando José Sant’Ana Soares e Silva, the Army Chief of Staff, emphasized that the vehicle is the backbone of the Mechanized Forces.
