Supplied by Germany, the Leopard 2A4 is a globally renowned main battle tank known for its power and mobility. By the end of the year, a total of 14 of these  tanks will be operational, significantly enhancing the battalion's striking force.

In addition, the 73rd Tank Battalion eagerly awaits the arrival of the ARV Bergepanzer 3 'Büffel' recovery vehicle in 2024. This vehicle will enhance maintenance and recovery capabilities for the Leopard 2A4 tanks, ensuring optimal operational availability.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Defense is actively engaged in negotiations for the acquisition of 58 Leopard 2A8 tanks and 19 support vehicles on Leopard 2 chassis by 2030. These state-of-the-art vehicles will offer improved features and performance, further strengthening the battalion's capabilities.

The developments underline the 73rd Tank Battalion's ongoing commitment to remain at the forefront of technology and prepare for future challenges. With the imminent arrival of new Leopard 2A4 tanks and ambitious acquisition plans, the battalion is well-positioned to play a crucial role in defending the nation's security.

The Czech Ministry of Defense recently announced the arrival of two additional Leopard 2A4 tanks in Přáslavice, Czech Republic. These tanks are part of a donation of 14 combat tanks and one recovery tank (Büffel) from the Federal Republic of Germany, as a gesture of gratitude for the Czech Republic's assistance to Ukraine. The tanks underwent successful military tests, paving the way for their deployment and training.

Minister of Defense Jana Černochová emphasized the importance of a heavy brigade in the army and the acquisition of modern Western technologies, including the Leopard 2A4 tanks. The compatibility with NATO and neighboring countries such as Poland and Hungary further enhances the significance of these tanks.

The donation from Germany includes spare parts, ammunition, and three years of service support, including training for Czech soldiers. The remaining 11 combat tanks are expected to be delivered by the end of 2023, while the Büffel recovery tank, mounted on an upgraded Leopard 2 chassis, will be ready by mid-2024.

The Czech Republic and Germany finalized the legal and technical details in September 2022, modifying the initial Leopard 2A4 tanks to meet the specific needs of the Czech Army and ensure compatibility with communication and information systems. The Leopard 2A4 tanks were acquired from the Swiss and German armed forces after their retirement. Meanwhile, another Büffel recovery tank will be leased to the Czech Republic.

Equipped with a powerful Rheinmetall smoothbore 120mm gun, the Leopard 2A4 is one of the most advanced battle tanks in the world. Its computerized fire control system enables engagement of moving targets at distances of up to 5,000 meters, even in challenging terrain. With a high-performance MTU MB 873 diesel engine, the tank boasts a maximum speed of 72 km/h on roads and a range of 550 km, ensuring operational flexibility.

The integration of the new Leopard 2A4 tanks into the 73rd Tank Battalion marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the Czech Army, reinforcing the country's role as a key contributor to NATO's collective defense.
