DSEI 2023: Rheinmetall and Elbit Systems partner on EH52 artillery programme.
Rheinmetall and Elbit Systems have teamed up to develop the EH52 (European Howitzer 52 Calibre) programme, aiming to meet the field artillery needs of European nations, including the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MOD). The collaboration features a fully automatic 52-calibre gun mounted on Rheinmetall's HX series 10x10 truck. The turret for the artillery piece has been designed by Elbit Systems and has undergone rigorous testing under two separate funded programmes. It has also been showcased to multiple NATO partners.

The initiative, led by Rheinmetall, aims to provide a fully qualified artillery solution that fosters commonality across various development lines and encourages collaboration among NATO allies. The UK MOD is being considered as a potential launch customer for the EH52 under their Mobile Fires Programme.
The HX series 10x10 truck, which serves as the base for the EH52, is part of Rheinmetall's HX family of vehicles that are already in use worldwide. Over 16,000 HX trucks are currently deployed by various armed forces.
Unveiled on May 6, 2021, the HX3 continues the legacy of its predecessors as a military-off-the-shelf (MOTS) product. Built around militarized MAN commercial components, the HX3 stands out for its new safety features, such as Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW), all of which can be disconnected for tactical applications. The vehicle will be available in 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 10x10 configurations, with the latter two options featuring active rear suspension and rear-axle steer options.
The HX3 in the 10x10 configuration could play a key role in artillery applications due to its Artillery Truck Interface (ATI). It also features a fully Automated Load Handling System (ALHS) and a Universal Torsion-Resistant Subframe (UTRS), further enhancing its capabilities in traditional logistics roles. The vehicle comes with standard EURO 6 engines, which are compatible with military-grade fuels after limited modifications, and also offer autonomous driving options.
The flat-panelled military cab of the HX/HX2 models has been redesigned for the HX3, featuring a new single-piece flat mine blast-protecting floor. Air conditioning has been relocated from the roof to the new dashboard assembly, and the compressed air cylinders have been moved from the chassis frame rails to the roof. All storage boxes are watertight, and the HX3 is capable of fording up to 1.5 meters of salt water. The HX3-specific chassis frame allows for up to 400 mm of torsional twist, making it an extremely versatile and robust platform.
The EH52 programme offers several advantages, including the combined expertise of Rheinmetall and Elbit Systems—two companies with extensive experience in field artillery. The platform is highly maintainable, providing the necessary operational mobility and room for future upgrades. Additionally, the programme leverages established industrial capabilities in Europe and the UK for both delivery and ongoing support.
