| 2023

At the ExpoDefensa 2023 exhibition, two Chinese tank models, the VT 4 and VT 5, are showcased as scale models. Colombia, on its part, has announced its intention to acquire combat tanks for its armed forces. But what if Colombia were to acquire these Chinese tanks? At the ExpoDefensa 2023 exhibition, a question arose at Army Recognition: what if Colombia were to acquire Chinese tanks? We will start from the assumption that this question is valid and attempt to explain how the acquisition of Chinese tanks by Colombia could significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Colombian Army.

Colombia's current armored capabilities are somewhat limited. The heavy cavalry squadrons primarily rely on Cascavel and Urutú armored vehicles, along with the more recent ASV M-1117. However, these existing vehicles have their limitations. The Cascavel and Urutú are aging and technologically outdated, while the ASV M-1117, despite being a more recent addition, offers limited firepower. The light cavalry squadrons are equipped with various models of the HMMWV all-terrain vehicle, M-462 Abir trucks, and motorcycles, supported by anti-tank platoons with Spike anti-tank missile launchers on HMMWV armored vehicles.

The Colombian Army has long shown interest in upgrading its armored capabilities, particularly to create an Armored Brigade in La Guajira, a strategic arid region in the northern part of the country. There's also a pressing need to replace the aging fleet of Brazilian armored vehicles and modernize the firepower of the ASV-M-1117, particularly as the older Cascavels are phased out.

The VT4 and VT5 tanks, if acquired, could represent a substantial upgrade for the Colombian military. The VT4, also known as the MBT-3000, is a third-generation main battle tank developed by NORINCO, a Chinese company. It's designed for modern warfare, with advanced armor protection, fire control systems, and high mobility. The VT 4 is equipped with a 125mm smoothbore gun capable of firing a variety of ammunition types, and it also features a remote weapon station for added defensive capabilities. Its advanced fire control system and powerful engine make it a formidable presence on the battlefield.

In contrast, the VT5 is a lighter tank, designed for operations in environments where heavier tanks might struggle. It's particularly suited for mountainous and forested terrain, making it a potentially ideal choice for Colombia's diverse landscapes. Despite its lighter weight, the VT5 is still heavily armed, equipped with a 105mm gun and a remote weapon station, similar to the VT4. It also boasts advanced composite armor and active protection systems, providing a balance of firepower, protection, and mobility.

The acquisition of these tanks could significantly enhance the Colombian military's armored capabilities, providing modern, versatile, and powerful new tools for defense and security operations. However, such a decision is unlikely as it would also mark a shift in Colombia's military procurement, indicating a growing openness to diversifying its sources of military equipment. The decision to acquire these tanks would not only be a strategic military choice but also a significant geopolitical statement. Other more plausible options might be considered by Colombia.
