Fering to develop military variant of its electric Pioneer with 7000 km range.

| 2023

Fering, a British startup, successfully secured a contract to develop a military version of its electric Pioneer 4x4 vehicle capable of a potential range of 7,000 km. They will be working in collaboration with a specialized tactical unit, the identity of which remains undisclosed. Fering is set to produce prototype models for evaluation before moving on to full-scale production. It is worth noting that these military adaptations will be manufactured alongside the civilian versions.

Designed under the guidance of Ben Scott-Geddes, a former engineer associated with Ferrari and McLaren, the Fering Pioneer boasts compact dimensions, similar to a standard delivery van. It spans 5526 mm in length, and 2,000 mm in width, with an adjustable height ranging from 1974 mm to 2,354 mm.

Looking deeper into its specifications, the Pioneer's construction integrates advanced materials and techniques from the supercar industry, resulting in a dry weight of around 1,500 kg. Its core features an aluminum space frame complemented by composite elements and robust fabric exterior panels, giving it a commendable payload capacity of 1,500 kg.

The Pioneer exhibits impressive off-road capabilities, capable of fording depths of up to 1400 mm, navigating gradients of up to 60%, achieving traverse angles of 50°, and surmounting step climbs of 500 mm.

This electric 4x4 can reach a top speed of 125 km/h and delivers a maximum torque of 600 Nm. It is powered by two electric motors, with lithium titanate oxide cells instead of conventional lithium-ion batteries, designed to withstand challenging weather conditions. Additionally, it incorporates an 800cc 3-cylinder range extender combustion engine, running on biodiesel, serving as an onboard multifuel generator with a 70 kW capacity.

This generator not only powers the motors but also recharges the battery during operation, ensuring optimal performance, especially during demanding tasks like hill climbing. Impressively, this setup grants the Pioneer an extraordinary range of 7,000 km (when equipped with long-range tanks) and the ability to operate silently for up to 80 km. Remarkably, it aims for around 50 mpg even when the batteries are depleted.

One of the Pioneer's standout attributes is its adaptability. It's designed to be easily modified or upgraded to cater to diverse customer needs, accommodating larger batteries or alternative range extenders such as alcohol-fueled engines or fuel cells. Furthermore, the Pioneer is built with longevity in mind, eliminating the need for disposal at the end of its lifecycle. It's engineered for straightforward repair and upgradability, and it features 22.5-inch rims capable of accommodating standard truck tires, ensuring tire availability even in remote locations.
