The framework agreement allows the Bundeswehr to procure several hundred thousand rounds of 120mm x 570 cal. service ammunition, primarily used by the Leopard 2 main battle tank. Immediately after the contract was signed, an initial order worth approximately €309 million was placed to meet immediate requirements.

The delivery scope includes multipurpose tank ammunition with a non-programmable fuse, as well as a programmable variant offering three different ignition modes: impact detonation with or without delay, and timed airburst function. The agreement also encompasses various types of practice ammunition with reduced range and lower cost, while maintaining comparable ballistic characteristics.

Rheinmetall plays a crucial role as the primary ammunition supplier for the 120mm smoothbore main armament of the Leopard 2, not only for Germany but also for several other user nations of this combat tank. The German armed forces, along with several partner nations, have entered into framework contracts with Rheinmetall to ensure a steady and long-term supply of ammunition. This strategy allows for better production planning and optimal utilization of existing capacity.

In addition to Germany, the framework agreement also includes the supply of a significant amount of tank ammunition to the Ukrainian armed forces, emphasizing the importance of enhancing military capabilities in the face of a new security situation.
