While the Greek Ministry’s announcement did not disclose specific details of Leonardo's proposed solutions, it is speculated that the offer might resemble Leonardo’s October 2022 proposal to Brazil for the upgrade of their Leopard 1A5 fleet. This proposal notably included the replacement of the battle tower with the advanced Hitfact Mk.2 turret system, capable of accommodating a 105/52 or 120/45mm gun. The Hitfact Mk.2 turret is mounted on the Centauro 2 anti-tank support vehicle which is now in service with the Italian army.

The Hitfact Mk.2 turret represents a significant advancement in armored vehicle technology. It requires a reduced crew of 2-3, thanks to its automatic loading system. This turret not only supports the main armament but also incorporates a 7.62mm conjugate machine gun. Additionally, it can be equipped with a Hitrole weapon station, suitable for a 7.62 or 12.7 mm machine gun, and an eight-fold smoke grenade launcher, enhancing its defensive capabilities.

The HITFACT® MkII marks a significant advancement in the HITFACT® series, known for its combat efficiency. It stands out as the first Large Caliber Turret globally to feature a high-pressure Main Battle Tank (MBT) gun on an 8×8 wheeled vehicle. This innovative design has already seen over 500 units employed by various armies.

Designed with modularity and lightness in mind, the HITFACT® MkII can accommodate both 105/52 mm rifled and 120/45 mm smoothbore guns, which are characterized by their low recoil force. In terms of secondary armament, it offers various configurations, including a 7.62mm machine gun mounted coaxially with the main gun, and a 12.7mm machine gun that can be mounted on a pintle. This pintle-mounted gun can be operated either manually or remotely, using the HITROLE® Light system.

The HITFACT® MkII digital Fire Control System includes stabilized Gunner and Commander electro-optical sights (both with Day and Night IR cameras and eyesafe laser rangefinder).

The potential upgrade of the Leopard-1A5 tanks with these advanced systems will undoubtedly boost the operational efficiency and combat capabilities of the Greek Army. This move indicates Greece's commitment to maintaining a formidable and modern defense force, aligning with its strategic military objectives in a rapidly evolving global security landscape.

The Ministry of National Defense has yet to make a final decision regarding the adoption of Leonardo's proposal. The defense community is keenly observing these developments, as they signify a crucial phase in the modernization of Greece’s military assets. Further details are expected to be released following the Ministry’s comprehensive evaluation of the proposed upgrades.
