Hanwha Aerospace delivers 18 K9PL self-propelled howitzers to Poland.

As reported by Hanwha Aerospace Europe on October 24, 2023, a ceremony took place in South Korea for the delivery of a new batch of 18 K9PL 155mm self-propelled howitzers to Poland. This delivery adhered to the agreed-upon schedule and saw the integration of these howitzers into the Polish army's operational capabilities. Notably, Hanwha Aerospace has increased its production capacity to ensure the timely delivery of these self-propelled howitzers, even surpassing the original deadlines.

This marks another step forward in fulfilling the contract to supply the Polish Armed Forces with a total of 212 K9PL Thunder. On September 9, 2023, Poland entered into another groundbreaking agreement with South Korea's Hanwha Defense, setting the stage for the acquisition of a grand total of 672 K9A1 155mm self-propelled howitzers.

The K9PL is derived from the well-established K9A1 Thunder, a South Korean self-propelled howitzer that holds a significant market share globally. Over 1,800 units are currently in service in various countries, including South Korea, Australia, Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Romania. Additionally, the K9 platform serves as the basis for the K9PL and the Krab in Poland, the Vajra-T in India, and the Turkish T-155 Firtina. Hanwha Defense, the manufacturer of the K9 Thunder, has also successfully demonstrated the compatibility of the K9 Thunder and the K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicle (ARV) with a diverse array of US munitions.

Renowned globally for its advanced technical features and formidable combat capabilities, the K9 Thunder, a product of meticulous South Korean engineering, stands as a testament to modern artillery prowess. Featuring a 155mm caliber, it can accurately engage targets at ranges of up to 30 km using standard ammunition, which can be extended to a formidable 40 km with rocket-assisted projectiles. Notably, the K9 Thunder boasts a rapid burst mode, enabling it to unleash three rounds in quick succession, providing a distinct advantage in high-intensity combat scenarios.

The K9PL, a derivative of the K9A1 variant, incorporates enhancements such as automatic fire control, driver night vision periscopes, and auxiliary power units. Hanwha is committed to further elevating the K9A1 to the A2 version, which will feature a fully automatic ammunition handling system. This autoloading K9A2 is capable of firing over nine rounds per minute and requires only a three-member crew, making it a formidable addition to any modern armed force.
