In September 2023, the Israeli army welcomed a major addition to its arsenal with the delivery of the 5th generation Merkava tank, nicknamed Barak, to the 52nd Armored Battalion. This new main battle tank not only symbolizes the legacy of Israel's military icon, the Merkava but also represents a significant advancement in AI technology and combat capabilities. According to IDF, the Barak tank has been effective in Gaza urban warfare and kept IDF casualties to a minimum.

The Barak tank stands out for its advanced capabilities, especially the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and technologies suited to the challenges of urban environments. Elbit Systems' Iron Vision system, integrated into the tank, is a major innovation. This head-up display system allows the crew to see through the vehicle's armor, offering 360-degree situational awareness. This technology provides a real-time, high-resolution video feed of the vehicle's surroundings, thus improving operational efficiency and reducing crew response time.
The development of the Barak is the result of a collaborative effort involving the Armored Vehicles Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, the IDF Ground Forces, and the Armored Corps, as well as several Israeli defense companies such as Elbit Systems, Rafael, and the Elta subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries. The tank is equipped with an extensive infrastructure of reliable sensors for target detection, part of an integrated system that allows for real-time sharing of intelligence information between the tank and other military units.
The tank is also equipped with Rafael's Windbreaker missile defense system, capable of detecting incoming missiles and detonating them away from the tank.
Following closely in the design footsteps of its predecessor, the Merkava IV, the Merkava V is equipped with a 120mm smooth-bore cannon developed by Israel Military Industries, capable of firing high-penetration and guided munitions up to a distance of 4,000 meters. Additional armaments include 7.62 mm machine guns and an internally housed 60 mm breech-loaded mortar.
Since the 1980s, the Merkava has been the IDF’s main battle tank, and the Barak is expected to gradually replace the older models, solidifying its role as the primary battle tank for the IDF's Armored Corps.
With these advancements, the Merkava Barak not only positions itself as a pillar of Israeli defense but also as a milestone in the history of modern armored warfare.
