As part of the ongoing modernization of the Lithuanian army's fleet, the army has received 34 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U5000 trucks, known for their unparalleled off-road mobility. The Unimog U5000 trucks will play a crucial role in executing military tasks, providing logistical support, and transporting soldiers and equipment. The delivery of these vehicles is part of a contract signed in 2021 between the Defense Resources Agency, the German manufacturer Daimler Trucks AG, and the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), with a planned total of 124 units.
The Mercedes-Benz Unimog U5000 is a 4x4 tactical military truck system designed for high mobility and performance in demanding terrains and climates. It is commonly used for military and logistical operations due to its ruggedness and adaptability. Available in short and long-wheelbase versions, the Unimog U5000's gross vehicle weight ranges from 7,500 kg to 12,500 kg, with a payload capacity varying between 4,000 kg and 7,500 kg. Its fuel tank has a capacity of 180 liters (47 gallons), and it offers a ground clearance of 49cm. The truck can reach 105 km/h (65 mph). The Unimog U5000 is powered by a water-cooled OM 924 LA turbocharged direct injection diesel engine, generating 160 kW and 810 Nm of torque. The engine is designed to comply with Euro 5 emissions, with Euro 3 as an optional standard.
A notable feature of the Unimog U5000 is its capability to be airlifted inside the cargo compartment of fixed-wing tactical transport aircraft, facilitating rapid deployment in critical situations. For operations in potentially hazardous areas, the truck's steel semi-forward cab can be equipped with armor plates to enhance crew protection.
In addition to the Unimog U5000, the 53 Peugeot Rifter multi-purpose vehicles will be utilized for daily tasks, logistics support, and transportation of military personnel, cargo, and supplies during non-combat operations. The procurement of 235 Peugeot Rifter units has been carried out for a total value of nearly 6.5 million euros. While 90 units have already been delivered, the remaining vehicles are expected to reach various army units before the year's end.
