Artillery systems are widely used in the conflict in Ukraine, and the mobility of mounted systems is highly valued for avoiding counter-battery fire. A 120mm KM12 mortar system mounted at the rear of a vehicle is therefore an interesting setup to see, and we will delve into its specifics.

The KM12 system is designed for fast and accurate firing, boasting a maximum rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute for 3 minutes and a sustained rate of 3 rounds per minute. It can engage targets at a distance of up to 8 km with high-explosive rounds and up to 13 km with rocket-assisted projectiles (RAP). The system's firing coverage is quite extensive, ranging from 45° to 70° in elevation and ±110° in traverse.

The system's reaction time for the first round is less than 60 seconds. This is crucial for "fire for effect" scenarios where the first round needs to be highly impactful. The KM12 is equipped with a semi-automatic loading device and offers multiple driving modes, including automatic, semi-automatic, and manual. It also features real-time fire control and a navigation system integrated with INS/GPS. The system can fire a variety of ammunition types, including high-explosive (HE), white phosphorus (WP), illumination (ILL), rocket-assisted projectiles (RAP), and training projectiles (TP). Despite its firepower, the system weighs less than 12 tons, making it easier to transport and deploy.

Operated by a crew of just three (a driver, a commander, and a gunner), the KM12 is designed for efficiency and rapid deployment. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a cruising range of 450 km.

The KM12 Mortar System brings a new level of tactical flexibility to the armed forces. Its quick deployment and high rate of fire make it an ideal choice for counter-battery actions, suppression of enemy air defenses, and support for advancing troops.
