OneWeb launches portable satellite terminal for tactical use.

OneWeb, a global Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications network company, is unveiling a new soldier-portable, lightweight user terminal (UT) designed to be carried in a backpack for operations close to the tactical edge. The terminal, named FoldSat LEo Ku OW Mil, aims to provide military personnel with high-speed, low-latency connectivity in challenging environments.

Global communications firm OneWeb is introducing a new, lightweight user terminal (UT) designed for portability and tactical edge operations. Engineered to fit into a backpack, this soldier-friendly device aims to revolutionize field communications in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks.

The new FoldSat Leo Ku OW Mil terminal is ruggedized and designed to fit in most common backpacks, measuring 452L x 374W x 114H mm in folded portable form, and 855L x 374W x 57H mm unfolded when operational.

The FoldSat terminal is manufactured by Inster (Oesia Group) and weighs 11.8 kg. It features a foldable antenna and a low-profile design. The terminal is optimized for use with OneWeb's Ku-Band LEO satellite constellation and is self-aligning. It can provide Wi-Fi connectivity up to a distance of 100 meters.

The terminal can achieve download speeds of up to 195 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 32 Mbps. It is also equipped with an external GNSS input for GPS-denied environments.

The FoldSat can be powered by various external sources, including mains electricity, a battery, solar panels, or a vehicle battery.

OneWeb plans to bring a global system online starting next year, with 634 satellites in orbit. While the system is designed to offer global coverage, there are geopolitical gaps, notably in China and Russia.
