Russian Defense receives new batch of BREM-1M Armored Recovery Vehicles.

| 2023

On September 10, 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense received a new batch of upgraded BREM-1M armored recovery and repair vehicles. The delivery was made by Uralvagonzavod as part of a state defense contract. Given the intensity of the fighting and the amount of damaged equipment since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the delivery of a new batch of recovery vehicles is more than welcome.

Uralvagonzavod has completed a three-year government contract for the production and delivery of these upgraded BREM-1M vehicles, sending the final batch to the military just in time for Tanker's Day. According to the company, these vehicles are of critical importance in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine for evacuating damaged equipment from the battlefield and other tasks. The exact number of vehicles in the batch has not been disclosed.

The BREM-1M is an upgraded version of the BREM-1, which was introduced into service in 1975. This version was accepted into service in 2013 and has been delivered to the troops since 2016. It is based on the T-90 tank and is designed to accompany units armed with T-72, T-80, and T-90 tanks. Its primary function is to provide technical support and evacuate tanks and other armored vehicles from the battlefield. The BREM-1M is equipped with a hydraulic crane, a winch, and a welding apparatus. It is armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun on an open turret.

The BREM-1M is operated by a crew of three men. The vehicle weighs 41,000 kg and its maximum speed is 50 km/h on the road, 35-45 km/h off-road, and 12 km/h when towing another vehicle. Regarding its range, the BREM-1M can travel up to 700 km on the road, between 450 and 650 km off-road, and 220 km when loaded.

It has been reported that the BREM-1M can also be used for civilian purposes, particularly for restoring damaged infrastructure. Unlike its predecessor, the BREM-1, the upgraded vehicle is equipped with a winch with an increased pulling force of up to 35 tons and a hydraulic crane with an increased lifting capacity of up to 20 tons.

The addition of such a vehicle to the Russian arsenal may not be as spectacular as a delivery of combat tanks but is nonetheless crucial. The BREM-1M is important for preventing the capture of damaged or abandoned vehicles. This new delivery should therefore reduce the losses of armored vehicles for Russian forces, which have been quite significant so far.
