Serbia proposes new PASARS mobile hybrid air defense system.

| 2023

At the Partner 2023 exhibition in Serbia, the Military Technical Institute introduces the PASARS (Protection and Anti-aircraft Self-propelled Artillery Rocket System) air defense system module which incorporates four anti-aircraft systems: the Bofors L/70 40mm Autocannon, the Mistral 3+ and Strela-2M surface-to-air-missiles, and the Malyutka 2T5 Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM). This module could be mounted on a six-wheel drive general-purpose off-road military vehicle, either the FAP 2228 or the FAP 2026BS/AV, adding an element of adaptability to the system.

This versatility enables the PASARS to serve a dual role: safeguarding land forces during marching positions and combat actions while also providing robust protection for critical facilities and installations against a wide spectrum of aerial threats, including cruise missiles, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and low-altitude aerial vehicles.

The heart of the PASARS system lies in its air defense module, an integrated suite of weaponry and sensors designed for precise and effective threat mitigation. This module incorporates four potent anti-aircraft systems. The centerpiece of the air defense module is the Bofors L/70 40mm autocannon. Renowned for its versatility and effectiveness, it boasts a vertical engagement range of 8,800 meters, and a horizontal range of 11,800 meters, and is capable of tracking and targeting aerial threats with a maximum speed of 500 meters per second.

The Mistral 3+ short-range surface-to-air missile adds a layer of precision to the PASARS system as it can engage targets at heights of up to 6,000 meters and engage at distances ranging from 500 to 7,500 meters. With a maximum target speed reaching 800 meters per second, the Mistral 3+ is well-equipped to intercept a wide range of threats.

Complementing the Mistral 3+ is the Strela-2M, offering versatility and adaptability. It can engage targets at heights ranging from 50 meters to 2,300 meters and at distances spanning 500 to 4,200 meters. Its maximum target speed reaches 400 meters per second, making it a reliable choice for engaging a variety of airborne threats.

Malyutka 2T5 Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM): The Malyutka 2T5 ATGM further enhances the PASARS system's anti-aircraft capabilities. With a maximum range of 5,000 meters and the capability to engage moving targets within distances of 750 to 4,500 meters, this system is equipped with a tandem-shaped charge warhead capable of penetrating up to 850 millimeters of armored protection behind explosive reactive armor (ERA). It can effectively engage targets with lateral speeds of up to 10 meters per second.

To ensure a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the operational environment, the PASARS system is equipped with the RPS-42 short-range radar. This radar system is capable of detecting, classifying, and tracking all types of aerial vehicles, including combat helicopters, UAVs, transport aircraft, and more, all at tactical ranges.

In addition to its formidable offensive capabilities, the PASARS system incorporates a Counter-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (C-UAV) jammer. This jammer is specifically designed to neutralize unauthorized drone flights by disrupting their communication signals and/or GNSS subsystem. Operating within a frequency range of 400-6,000 MHz, it offers a power output ranging from 20 to 50 watts, providing effective countermeasures against rogue UAVs within its operational range.
