Ukrainian counteroffensive strengthened by Swedish CV9040C Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

Ukraine's southern counteroffensive has received a significant boost with the introduction of advanced CV9040C infantry fighting vehicles operated by Ukrainian soldiers trained in Sweden. This development comes as the Ukrainian army faces losses of American M2A2 Bradley fighting vehicles during their assault on Russian defenses in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Sweden has shown support by donating around 50 CV9040C infantry fighting vehicles armed with a 40mm autocannon, reinforcing Ukraine's war efforts. A photograph of a Swedish CV9040C on Ukrainian soil, shared by Ukraine Weapons Tracker, energized Ukrainian forces. As the CV9040C battalions prepare to join the counteroffensive, Ukrainian soldiers who completed training are ready to assume a leading role.

The Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) (Stridsfordon 90, Strf 90), is a family of Swedish tracked armored combat vehicles designed by Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets Materielverk, FMV), Hägglunds and Bofors during the mid-1980s to early 1990s, entering service in Sweden in the mid-1990s. The CV90 platform design has continuously evolved from the Mk 0 to current Mk IV with technological advances and changing battlefield requirements. The Swedish version of the main infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is fitted with a turret from Bofors equipped with a 40 mm Bofors autocannon. Export versions are fitted with Hägglunds E-series turrets, armed with either a 30 mm Mk44 or a 35 mm Bushmaster autocannon.

Developed specifically for the Nordic subarctic climate, the vehicle has very good mobility in snow and wetlands while carrying and supporting eight, and in later versions six, fully equipped soldiers. Other variants include forward artillery observation, command and control, anti-aircraft, armored recovery vehicle, electronic warfare versions and so forth. Currently, about 1,400 vehicles in 17 variants are in service with ten user states, seven of which are part of the NATO alliance.

The CV9040C, a prominent variant within the CV90 family, has been in service with the Swedish army since the early 1990s and is widely adopted by nations such as Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, and Denmark. Slovakia and the Czech Republic have also placed orders for this versatile combat vehicle.

Weighing 37 tons, the CV9040C surpasses the American M2A2 Bradley by 12 tons, providing superior armor protection. It has a 3P ammunition programmer, climate control and anti-spall liner. Strf 9040C (CV9040C) is an upgraded version for crew training and international operations. Compared to the 9040B1, it has additional all-around armor, laser filtering in all periscopes and tropical-grade air conditioning. Due to the bulk and weight of the modifications, only six soldiers can be carried.
