The M-SHORAD, or Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense, is the US Army's latest response to the evolving threats from enemy drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. Integrated onto the robust and versatile Stryker 8x8 armored vehicle platform, the M-SHORAD is designed to provide mobile and agile air defense for ground troops, ensuring they are protected from a wide range of aerial threats.

In terms of combat capabilities, the M-SHORAD boasts high mobility, being mounted atop the 8-wheeled Stryker A1, allowing for swift repositioning on the battlefield and ensuring dynamic air defense coverage. This advanced system is capable of engaging a variety of threats including cruise missiles, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), low-flying high-speed fixed-winged aircraft, and helicopters. Serving as a short-range surface-to-air, shoot-on-the-move air defense weapon, its primary role is to offer protection for the maneuver force, ensuring ground units are shielded from aerial threats as they move across the battlefield.

The M-SHORAD is equipped with a formidable array of weapons and components. It features a versatile RiwP (Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform) Turret that can be equipped with various weapon systems, a Stinger missile launcher for engaging aerial threats at short to medium ranges, and an advanced MX-GCS EO/IR system for target detection and tracking. Additionally, it boasts a powerful XM914 30mm autocannon for engaging aerial targets, a M240 7.62 mm machine gun for close-in defense, and four Stinger surface-to-air missiles designed for precision strikes against aerial threats. The system also incorporates an Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Antenna to prevent friendly fire incidents and a radar system for target detection and tracking.

By 2023, the US Army plans to have 144 M-SHORAD systems distributed across four battalions, highlighting the importance and trust placed in this advanced air defense solution. The display of the M-SHORAD on Stryker at MSPO 2023 underscores the US Army's commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of its ground forces in modern combat scenarios.
