The program, known as the Low Altitude Stalking and Strike Ordnance venture (LASSO), falls under the jurisdiction of the Program Executive Office Soldier (PEO Soldier). This initiative addresses the pressing requirement for lethal unmanned systems on the battlefield. LASSO systems are designed to be carried by troops and utilize a launch tube, featuring a deadly payload. The equipment is also equipped with an electro-optical and infrared sensor, precision flight controls, and the capability to identify and engage distant targets.
Specifically tailored for infantry brigade combat teams, the "suicide" drone is anticipated to be deployed to soldiers by 2024. The Army is presently finalizing contract details with the defense industry for this purpose, with a focus on utilizing currently available systems during the initial phases of the LASSO program.
During the Russia-Ukraine war, both sides are heavily relying on First-Person-View (FPV) drones, which are lightweight, portable, and expendable systems designed for kamikaze-style missions. However, there is a demand not only for a substantial number of FPV-type drones at the frontline but also for further advancements that would enable these drones to strike targets in the rear areas of the battlefield.
