Dan Furber, director of ground vehicle production at BAE Systems’ Combat Mission Systems business, emphasized the crucial role of the M109 in current battlefields, dubbing it the “King of Battle.” Its combined firepower and maneuverability make it an indispensable force, crucial for achieving dominance in modern combat scenarios. The services provided by BAE Systems will ensure the US Army maintains a high level of operational readiness, securing the continuous availability of this powerful asset for future deployments.
The agreement specifies that work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of March 7, 2029. This arrangement allows for the flexibility and adaptability needed to meet the changing requirements of the US Army and the maintenance needs of its M109 fleet.
Introduced in the early 1960s, the M109, an American 155 mm turreted self-propelled howitzer, has undergone numerous modifications and upgrades to align with the demands of modern warfare. As the most common indirect-fire support weapon among maneuver brigades in armored and mechanized infantry divisions in Western armies, its significance is unmatched.
Operated by a crew of four, including the section chief/commander, driver, gunner, and ammunition handler/loader, the M109 remains an essential component of the US Army’s artillery capabilities. Its versatility and formidable firepower are crucial for maintaining battlefield supremacy and ensuring mission success.
