The Turkish company BMC has introduced the KIRPI II at the World Defense Show (WDS) 2024, an evolution of the KIRPI I, designed to provide exceptional protection and maneuverability on the battlefield. This 4x4 armored vehicle is equipped with Aselsan's SARP 12.7mm and Dual SARP remote-controlled weapon stations, capable of being armed with 7.62mm and 12.7mm machine guns, as well as a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. The KIRPI II features an independent suspension system and composite armor, significantly enhancing vehicle mobility while offering reinforced protection against mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and ballistic attacks.
The KIRPI II is distinguished by its monocoque armored cabin, equipped with special armored windshields, shock-absorber seats, a weapon station, and an emergency exit hatch. It is powered by an 8.9-liter, 375hp Cummins ISL9E3 turbo diesel engine, capable of transporting 13 troops, including a three-person crew (driver, commander, and gunner). With a curb weight of 19,050 kg and a combat weight of 20,825 kg, it meets STANAG 4569 level 4 mine protection and level 3 ballistic protection standards, augmented by a spall liner. The KIRPI II can navigate through water up to 80cm deep (with an optional upgrade to 120cm), handle 30° side slopes and 60% gradients, measuring 7.375m in length, 2.865m in width, and 3.81m in height, achieving a maximum speed of 100km/h and a range of 750km.
Presented at IDEF 2023, the KIRPI-II ambulance model completes the range, illustrating the vehicle's versatility and adaptability to the different missions and operational needs of the armed forces.
On August 8, 2017, BMC was awarded a contract under the Defense Industries Presidency (SSB) for the procurement of 529 new generation KIRPI (KIRPI-II) vehicles. The Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC) received 329 KIRPI-II 4x4 MRAPs, and the Gendarmerie General Command (GGC) acquired 200 KIRPI-II MRAPs. The KIRPI vehicle is utilized by various armed forces globally, demonstrating its effectiveness and popularity. For instance, the Djiboutian Army uses the BMC Kirpi I with Aselsan's SARP DUAL remote-controlled weapon station. The Kosovo Defense Ministry confirmed the purchase of 14 BMC Kirpi 4x4 MRAP vehicles, with deliveries expected in 2022. The Tunisian Army has 233 units in service, and the Ukrainian Navy received 50 BMC Kirpi 4x4 MRAP vehicles from Turkey, with 150 more expected, and an additional batch of at least 42 vehicles was spotted en route to Ukraine in early 2023. According to some analysts, a total of 27 units have been destroyed, damaged, abandoned, or captured in the war in Ukraine.
