| Defense News Army 2024

The Brazilian Army announced via its X account on April 21, 2024, its intention to acquire 420 Iveco IDV LMV-2 light multi-role vehicles as part of its efforts to strengthen its land forces. According to the Army Projects Office (EPEx), the Brazilian Army is about to finalize a significant agreement with IVECO for the acquisition of these vehicles, now renamed VBMT 4X4 Guaicuru. This move follows the recent signing of a series of intent protocols on April 17, 2024, aimed at expanding and diversifying the portfolio of armored vehicles available to the national land forces.

Under the contract signed in 2019, the first of 32 LMV-BR vehicles was delivered to the Brazilian Army during a ceremony at the Iveco Defence Vehicles factory in Sete Lagoas (MG) in April 2021. The remaining 31 units of this batch were delivered in 2022 as part of the army's modernization process, with an option for two additional batches of 77 vehicles each (totaling 186 vehicles). The LMV-BR was selected in 2015 by the Brazilian Army as the new armored multi-task, light-wheeled vehicle (VBMT-LR).

The LMV 2 is an Italian 4x4 wheeled armored multi-role vehicle, developed by Iveco in the 2010s and entered into service in 2018. As a derivative of the LMV Lince, it has been enhanced to offer superior technical capabilities. Weighing 8.1 tons when fully loaded, it is powered by an FPT F1C engine and a new 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF, providing 145 to 162 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque.

The LMV2 features three differential locks, automatic transmission management (ADM), and an electronic stability program (ESP). Its specially designed suspension setup and new tires enhance its off-road capability. For crew protection, it includes a decoupled cell, an anti-explosion shield, a multi-layer floor structure, suspended and cushioned seats, and a "double role" rigid roof to accommodate either a manual turret or a remote weapon station (RWS).

The LMV2 can integrate various mission systems, such as BMS, intercom, ECM, and radio. Its shape and compact dimensions reduce its cross-section signature, making it highly transportable by land, air, and helicopter. Finally, a new digital electronic architecture and an adapted service regime simplify its maintenance.
