Brazil to receive Centauro II fire support armored vehicles.

| Defense News Army 2024

The Brazilian Army is set to enhance its capabilities with the upcoming addition of two Centauro II armored vehicles in May 2024. This acquisition is part of Brazil's broader initiative to modernize its military forces, aiming to secure a total of 98 units by 2031 for 5 billion Brazilian Reais. This procurement is a result of a collaboration with Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO), a joint venture between Iveco and Leonardo.

The Brazilian Army has engaged with Iveco Defense Vehicles, an Italian company, for the delivery of 36 of these vehicles. They are designed for reconnaissance and fire support roles.

The first two units of the Centauro II, received by Brazil in 2022, were thoroughly tested in Italy. These tests were conducted to ensure the vehicles could be adapted to meet the unique operational needs of the Brazilian Army.

The Centauro II is an armored vehicle primarily designed in Italy and currently in service in the Italian and Brazilian armies. In terms of armament, the Centauro II is equipped with a 120 mm main gun capable of handling various types of ammunition. It also has a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a remotely operated turret armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun. This armament configuration makes it particularly effective in anti-tank roles and fire support.

For protection, the Centauro II is equipped with an additional armor kit, offering resistance against mines, radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (RC-IEDs), and the latest generation of kinetic munitions.

It also stands out for its speed and mobility. Capable of reaching a top speed of 105 km/h, it can move quickly across the battlefield. Its operational range is 800 km, making it suitable for extended missions without frequent refueling.

The Centauro II can accommodate a crew of four and its dimensions are 8.25 meters in length, 3.38 meters in width, and 3.65 meters in height. These features make it well-suited for a variety of roles on the battlefield, offering a balance between offensive power, defensive protection, and tactical mobility.

The vehicle is equipped with various accessories to enhance its operational capabilities. These include a radio system, a digital intercom, an integrated Battle Management System (BMS), protection against RC-IEDs, a computerized fire control system, a laser rangefinder, a laser warning system, an NBC protection system, an auxiliary heater, as well as fire-fighting and anti-explosion protection systems.

What distinguishes the Centauro II is its impressive mobility across various terrains, attributed to its internal digital tire pressure gauge and a robust wheel design, which together enhance the vehicle's agility and maneuverability. Unlike the heavily armored tanks seen in conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, the Centauro II prioritizes speed and flexibility.

The acquisition of Centauro II vehicles marks a step in Brazil’s military modernization journey. However, the addition of just two Centauro IIs is far from sufficient; more orders are needed, or at least an acceleration in the delivery pace.
