In response to the devastating mega-fire that swept through four municipalities in the Valparaíso and Marga Marga provinces in early February 2024, the Chilean Navy's Marine Infantry Corps (CIM) deployed extraordinary measures to ensure public safety and order. Within the framework of the Constitutional State of Catastrophe Exception, South Korean Kia KLTV181 4x4 and KLTV182 4x4 light tactical vehicles were mobilized in the affected areas, including Viña del Mar and Quilpué, highlighting the armed forces' commitment to disaster relief operations.

These vehicles, recently acquired by Chile at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, are part of the family of light tactical vehicles developed by South Korea. Their introduction into the Chilean armed forces meets a specific need expressed by the institution to equip Marine Infantry personnel operating in the Arauco and Biobío provinces. This region, plagued by acts of violence and terrorist attacks, was already under a state of emergency constitutional exception.

The KLTV family of light tactical vehicles, designed by Kia to meet the specific needs of the South Korean Armed Forces with support and funding from that country's Ministry of National Defense, started production in June 2016. These vehicles are now also in service in several countries, including the Philippines, Mali, Nigeria, and Turkmenistan, demonstrating their effectiveness and adaptability to various operational environments.

The KLTV catalog includes several versions adapted to different roles, such as the KLTV141 for command, the KLTV181 for troop transport, the KLTV182 for armored reconnaissance, and other configurations for multipurpose use, workshops, cargo transport, or equipped for special missions like NBC reconnaissance.

The KLTV181 model, designed for personnel transport, can accommodate a driver and three passengers. Its technical features include a total length of 4.90 m, a width of 2.19 m, a height of 2.35 m, and a ground clearance of 42 cm, allowing exceptional mobility across various terrains. Powered by a Euro 5 turbo diesel engine of 2,959cc developing 225 HP, it offers a range of 640 km and can reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The vehicle is also equipped with air conditioning, an 8-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and armor compliant with Stanag 4569 standards, ensuring optimal protection against small arms fire and artillery fragments.

The KLTV182, intended for armored reconnaissance, shares several technical characteristics with the KLTV181 but is distinguished by specific equipment adapted to its reconnaissance mission. The KLTV182 is designed to provide a mobile and secure platform capable of conducting reconnaissance operations in various environments. Like the KLTV181, it features a Euro 5 turbo diesel engine of 2,959cc producing 225 HP, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission for fast and efficient battlefield mobility. The KLTV182's configuration is optimized for exploration and surveillance, including advanced communication systems and reconnaissance equipment. While sharing the fording capability, maximum speed, and range of the KLTV181, the KLTV182 incorporates additional features such as advanced optical and electronic systems for observation and target marking, thus enhancing its crucial role in reconnaissance and intelligence gathering operations. Its design also considers the need for increased stealth and the ability to operate in diverse combat conditions, making the KLTV182 an essential tool for modern forces engaged in complex and evolving scenarios.

The adoption of the KLTV by Chile is part of a historical continuity of collaboration with Kia, starting in 1986 with the purchase of KM 414 and KM 420 vehicles, and continuing with the gradual integration of military vehicles tailored to the specific needs of the Marine Infantry. This modernization of the vehicle fleet demonstrates Chile's commitment to enhancing its response capabilities in the face of current security and humanitarian challenges.
