At the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX 2024) in Qatar, the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) exhibited the CM-501GA non-line-of-sight (NLOS) anti-tank missile. This model is designed to be lighter than its predecessor, the CM-501G, and is intended for use on a variety of platforms such as light vehicles, small ships, and helicopters. The missile has a reported operational range of up to 40 kilometers.

The CM-501GA, along with the CM-501XA tactical missile, was first revealed at the 2014 Zhuhai Air Show. Both missiles are based on the CM-501G missile, initially displayed in 2012, and are conceptually similar to the US "Net Fire" NLOS system, which was discontinued in 2010. The integration of these missiles into the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is aimed at enhancing the army's operational capabilities, particularly in terms of control and response times in variable combat situations, beneficial in challenging terrains. The CM-501XA is tasked with carrying out initial reconnaissance to collect and relay data essential for the deployment of the CM-501GA.

At the 2018 Zhuhai Air Show, CASIC presented a multi-purpose precision strike weapon system aimed at the export market, including the CM-501GA/CM-502 missile and the CM-501XA/CM-501X loitering missile, along with the required targeting and support systems. Subsequently, at the 2019 Abu Dhabi International Defense Exhibition, it was revealed that the PLA had started deploying these tactical missiles.

An inert version of the CM-501GA was also showcased by Poly Defence, a subsidiary under the Poly Group conglomerate, during the IDEX 2021 exhibition. This system, designed to be mounted on a 6×6 vehicle platform using the Dongfeng CSK181 truck, is capable of carrying 16 NLOS missiles. Each missile can be launched vertically, marked by a distinct white contrail during its flight. The Dongfeng Mengshi CSK-181 truck is designed with a double cab and an extended bed to accommodate large cargoes, including the missile system's box launcher, which, as stated by Poly Defence, can be rapidly positioned with a crane. This system allows for adaptability in transportation, as the launching device can be mounted on alternate vehicles beyond the standard Dongfeng CSK181, depending on the requirements of the end users.

Poly Defence's promotional materials at IDEX 2021 indicated that the CM-501GA’s transporter is part of a larger system that includes a surveillance and command vehicle along with an escort. For acquiring targets beyond visual range, a small drone is employed for reconnaissance, allowing for real-time data transmission. Operators can then select their launch sequence based on this information.

During the Defense & Security 2022 exhibition in Thailand, CASIC provided more details about the CM-501GA system, outlining its capabilities in integrated information combat, autonomous operations, dynamic deployment, quick response, and adaptability across various platforms. The CM-501GA missile is equipped with a dual mid-course guidance system combining an inertial navigation system (INS) and a satellite datalink, alongside TV and infrared (IR) guidance for the terminal flight phase. The missile's known specifications include a length of 2 meters, a diameter of 180 mm, and a total weight of 100 kilograms, which includes a 20-kilogram high-explosive warhead, with a claimed accuracy within 1 meter and a success rate of 90%.

The CM-501GA system is designed to engage a range of targets, including stationary high-value assets, moving units on land and at sea, and low-altitude aerial threats such as helicopters and drones at distances ranging from 5 to 40 kilometers, employing a box launcher. It supports various munition types, including a "lightweight" cruise missile intended for larger targets like infrastructure. The CM-501XA/CM-501X serves as a reconnaissance unit, enhancing the system's capability to assess and respond to battlefield conditions.

The introduction of this NLOS system within the Chinese Army represents an approach to reduce reliance on additional reconnaissance and support equipment, which could be crucial in situations involving mobile enemy units, as demonstrated by the war in Ukraine. Additionally, there are indications that China is negotiating the sale of CM-501GA missiles to Pakistan for potential use on the Pakistan Navy's Z-9 Harbin helicopters and 054 A/P frigates.
