In March 2024, Chinese Air Force Deputy Commander Wang Wei confirmed that the H-20, a new stealth strategic bomber with long-range strategic strike capabilities, is set to be unveiled. It is noteworthy that this announcement arrived just after the US B-21 Raider stealth bomber entered low-rate production.

According to Chinese media reports, the H-20 long-range bomber is said to have a maximum range of 13,000 kilometers and a combat radius of 5,000 kilometers, enabling it to conduct long-distance strikes. Its stealth capability further enhances its reputation as a potential deterrent threat. It is also reported that the H-20 could potentially surpass the United States in terms of aerial capabilities.

The US Department of Defense estimates that the H-20 could have a range of over 8,500 kilometers. With the H-20, China would join the United States and Russia as a power capable of launching nuclear missiles from air, sea, and land.

Analysts note that the arrival of the H-20 reflects the evolution of the People's Liberation Army's weaponry and China's reduced dependence on Russian arms. They also emphasize that the H-20 could potentially shift the strategic balance in the region, with potential implications for US-China relations.

Chinese state television has suggested that the H-20 could alter the strategic calculus between the United States and China by doubling the strike range of its current H-6K, dubbed the country's B-52. Designed to reach targets beyond the second island chain, it would be capable of targeting US bases in Japan, Guam, the Philippines, and other countries from bases on mainland China. This expanded capability would place China alongside the United States and Russia as a power possessing a triad of nuclear missile launch capabilities from air, sea, and land.
