DIMDEX 2024: China Displays SY-400 BP-12A ballistic missile acquired by Qatar.

During the DIMDEX exhibition held in Qatar from March 4th to 6th, 2024, China showcases the SY-400 BP-12A short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) system, which Qatar had previously revealed its acquisition of several years earlier. Indeed, it was during the 2017 National Day Parade that the Qatari military first introduced this model, making the kingdom the last country in the region to possess ballistic missiles.

Mounted on an 8x8 Wanshan WS 2400 chassis adorned with desert camouflage, this system appeared to be a modified version of the Chinese short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) system SY-400. Capable of delivering conventional payloads of approximately 200 kilograms over a distance of 400 kilometers, this 400mm missile unit features notable modifications, including the carriage of two larger caliber BP-12A canisters instead of the eight SY-400 canisters, suggesting an increased striking capacity.

Measuring approximately 12 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 3 meters in height, with a total weight of around 35 tonnes, the vehicle is powered by a 517-horsepower Deutz diesel engine, enabling it to reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h with a range of 650 km. It is equipped with a satellite-inertial guidance system for increased precision, boasting a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of less than 50 meters. The launchers are accompanied by dedicated transporters carrying two reloads each to ensure continuous missile availability.

Manufactured by the Sichuan Aerospace Industry Corporation (SCAIC), these systems represent a significant technological advancement. Despite the Chinese People's Liberation Army classifying the SY-400 as precision rocket artillery, the sale of this sophisticated system to Qatar had not been disclosed before this parade.

The BP-12A system, in particular, signifies Qatar's desire to expand its arsenal with longer-range and heavier missiles suitable for various launching platforms, demonstrating increased operational flexibility.

The introduction of this system at DIMDEX 2024 by its manufacturer, SCAIC, not only highlights the expansion of the Chinese defense industry into the international market but also confirms Qatar as a key partner in this dynamic.
