EU Aids Moldova in Defense Enhancement with VERA-NG Surveillance Systems.

On April 25, 2024, under the European Peace Facility (EPF) initiative, a collaboration between the Czech company ERA and the Estonian Centre for Defence Investment (ECDI) was announced to provide Moldova with the VERA-NG passive surveillance systems. This effort is part of the EU's broader strategy to improve Moldova’s defense capabilities, specifically targeting air defense and aerial surveillance enhancements.

The VERA-NG Passive Surveillance System, with its advanced capabilities and adaptability, is making significant strides in the field of passive radiolocation, specifically tailored to address modern security threats. Utilizing the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) principle, this system excels in multilateration, providing precise 2D and 3D localization of air, ground, and naval targets. Its high accuracy and real-time tracking abilities surpass traditional direction finders, particularly with its capability to track unmanned aerial systems (UAS)and precisely measure signal parameters.

One of the defining features of VERA-NG is its covert operation mode, as the system does not emit any electromagnetic energy, which makes it virtually 'invisible' to adversaries. This capability is crucial for operations that require stealth, ensuring that the system can observe without being detected. It supports strategic electronic intelligence (ELINT) gathering, processing, and analyzing electronic support measure (ESM) data to maintain an up-to-date reference database, contributing significantly to air defense and electronic warfare readiness.

The system's design includes a central processing station and three auxiliary receiving stations, enhancing its wide-band signal detection capabilities. These stations are equipped with compact, reliable receivers that cover a broad frequency range from 87.5 MHz to 18 GHz, including high-frequency radar and jamming signals. The central station is pivotal in tracking, identifying non-cooperative targets, and performing detailed signal analysis for ELINT operations.

VERA-NG’s infrastructure is built to accommodate both stationary and mobile operations, reflecting current demands for highly mobile and rapid-deployable defense systems. The mobile version includes a shelter and power generator and can be configured with various mast components ranging from tripods to 25-meter transportable masts. This flexibility ensures that VERA-NG can be deployed quickly and efficiently in various operational contexts.

Overall, the VERA-NG system stands out in modern military and security operations, augmenting traditional air defense systems by providing a passive surveillance alternative that enhances situational awareness and supports advanced electronic warfare capabilities. Its integration into defense networks marks a significant advancement in leveraging technology to bolster national and international security measures.

Magnus-Valdemar Saar, Director of ECDI, highlighted that this project aligns with the EU’s goals to reinforce Moldova’s defense infrastructure. He pointed out that this initiative builds on their considerable expertise in procuring sophisticated surveillance systems and armored vehicles. Ondřej Chlost, CEO of ERA, added that the project reflects the EU's commitment to utilizing advanced technology and strategic partnerships to enhance global security and stability.

This initiative represents a significant advancement in the EU’s continuous support for countries aiming to elevate their defense capabilities and promote broader security cooperation.
