Initiated in the early 2000s, the development of the K239 Chunmoo was driven by the need to replace aging MLRS platforms in South Korea. After rigorous testing in 2013, the system was officially adopted by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces in 2016. Built on a robust 8-wheel drive chassis, the Chunmoo offers enhanced mobility and maneuverability, setting it apart from older, tracked MLRS systems.
One of the most significant features of the Chunmoo MLRS is its multi-caliber capability. It can launch a variety of munitions, including 130 mm, 227 mm, and 239 mm rockets and missiles. This versatility allows for tailored responses to different tactical situations, from rapid suppression fire to precision strikes on strategic targets.
The system's munitions cater to a range of operational needs. The 130 mm rockets provide effective rapid-fire capability over a distance of approximately 36 kilometers, ideal for engaging infantry, light armored vehicles, and fortified positions. The 227 mm rockets, with a range of up to 80 kilometers, are suitable for targeting larger and more fortified objectives like command centers and air defense installations. At the high end, the 239 mm missiles, with a maximum range of about 160 kilometers, are designed for high-precision attacks on key enemy infrastructure and strategic assets.
Enhancing its battlefield utility, the Chunmoo can carry multiple rocket pods, allowing it to fire various types of munitions in a single sortie. Equipped with advanced guidance and targeting systems, including GPS and inertial navigation, the MLRS boasts high accuracy and reliability. Its integration with modern fire control and command and control systems ensures seamless operational coordination with other military units.
Presented at Eurosatory 2024, the Chunmoo MLRS underscores Hanwha's commitment to advancing military technology and supports the strategic capabilities of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces in addressing diverse threats and challenges on today's dynamic battlefields.
