In January 2024, the last AH-64DN Apaches were dismantled and shipped to the United States to use their parts in the new AH-64E models. Although the AH-64E utilizes components from the original AH-64D, all systems have been reset, and they are considered as new aircraft.

The refurbished aircraft features the most modern configuration, including more powerful engines, an improved gearbox, and new rotor blades made from composite materials. The latest communication, navigation, sensor, data correlation, and cognitive decision-assistance systems for pilots offer significant combat advantages over the D model and enhance combat effectiveness.

Until now, the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNAF) had a fleet of 30 Apache D helicopters that arrived at the base in July 1999. It has ordered 28 AH-64E Apache helicopters, eight of which will be used by Squadron 302 at Robert Gray Army Airfield at Fort Cavazos in the USA, and twenty at Squadron 301 at Gilze-Rijen.

The entire fleet of modernized helicopters is expected to be delivered by 2025 and operational until 2050. The modernization was carried out at Boeing facilities, where the combat vehicles were completely dismantled and certain components were tested, reused, or replaced with new ones.

According to an official from the APACHE project office at PEO Aviation, the Apache is the most advanced attack helicopter, and the RNAF is seeing a significant increase in attack power, versatility, situational awareness, and interoperability.

The Boeing AH-64 Apache, an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter, was first introduced to service in April 1986. Known for its advanced avionics, firepower, and agility, the Apache has played a crucial role in various combat operations around the globe. It features a tandem cockpit for two, a 30 mm M230 chain gun, and carries a mix of weapon systems including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. Over 2,400 AH-64s have been produced, highlighting its significance and continued use in modern military operations.
