The Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS) program began in 2019 and involves Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Sweden. Germany has now joined the research and development (R&D) phase.

Germany has joined the R&D phase of the multinational CAVS Patria 6x6 AFV alongside existing participant countries, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, and Sweden.

Under the terms of the agreement, Germany will have access to the results of product development packages created under the program and will be able to co-define the requirements for future mission variants.

As part of the CAVS program, the development of the 6x6 armored vehicle system was led by Patria with the intention that a large majority of vehicle supply would be made using the local industrial capacities of the member countries.

Germany will bring substantial industrial capacity to the program via Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.

Shephard Defence Insight estimated that Germany would seek to procure about 350 units based on required force levels and the German stock of APCs that will soon be decommissioned.

Based on the proposed configuration, it is likely that the CAVS program will target the German fleet of wheeled armored vehicles, particularly the TPz1 Fuchs variants.

Germany has about 940 units of these vehicles which are expected to be retired from service by 2025, but the German government has already acquired 400 Boxer APCs to modernize its wheeled APC inventory.

Earlier this week, Patria unveiled plans to upgrade vehicles as part of a move towards standard production vehicles, while Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen also authorized the start of vehicle procurement from Patria.
