The Akashteer system is designed to allow the army to monitor low-altitude airspace over battle zones and effectively manage ground-based air defense weapon systems. It emerged nearly a year after the Ministry of Defense signed a contract worth 219,464,878 euros with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to strengthen the Indian Army's air defense capabilities through this new system.

With the year 2024 declared as the "Year of Tech Absorption" by the Indian Army, various initiatives are in progress to integrate niche technologies and systems into its arsenal. The introduction of Akashteer Control Centers is a major milestone in the army's transformation journey, addressing both the current and future needs of complex air defense operations.

Akashteer seeks to revolutionize air defense operations by seamlessly integrating radar and communication systems at all levels into a unified network. This integration provides unparalleled situational awareness and control, enabling quick engagement of hostile targets, reducing the risk of friendly fire incidents, and ensuring the safety of friendly aircraft in contested airspace.

A key feature of Akashteer is its emphasis on mobility and resilience. The system's Control Centers are designed to be vehicle-based and mobile, ensuring that operational capabilities are maintained even in challenging communication environments.

Overall, the Akashteer system is poised to achieve complete automation of air defense operations, significantly enhancing India's air defense posture and readiness.
