Norway Enhances Air Defence Capabilities with Significant Investment in NASAMS Missiles Production.
Oslo, Norway, March 15, 2024 – The Norwegian government has announced a substantial commitment to strengthen the nation's air defense systems by expediting the delivery of the Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS). In a strategic move to address current security challenges, an investment of approximately 941 million NOK is being allocated to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) to secure critical components for the production of NASAMS launcher units.

This investment is part of a broader proposition aimed at bolstering the Norwegian Armed Forces, which is currently under consideration by the Norwegian Parliament. The initiative reflects Norway's response to the heightened security demands in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the critical role of air defense systems in modern warfare.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The present security climate necessitates the expedited procurement of advanced air defense systems to protect both civilian and military objectives effectively. The conflict in Ukraine has underscored the vital importance of air defense in wartime."
In response to the government's initiative, Geir Håøy, CEO of KONGSBERG, expressed gratitude, noting that the company has already invested nearly three billion NOK to expand its production capabilities in air defense and missile systems. "We welcome the Government's initiative to introduce new investment plans," Håøy remarked.
NASAMS, a product of collaboration between KONGSBERG and American defense contractor Raytheon, is a highly regarded air defense system currently in use by 13 countries. The system's increased delivery times have prompted the Norwegian government's proactive approach to securing critical parts in advance, thereby streamlining future procurements.
Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram addressed the issue of extended delivery periods in the defense industry, stating, "We aim to order critical parts now to speed up future procurements of NASAMS. This initiative is expected to decrease production times."
Eirik Lie, CEO of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, highlighted the benefits of the government's investment, saying, "This government initiative will allow us to expedite NASAMS deliveries once new contracts are finalized. It offers us the chance to secure critical components with lengthy delivery schedules sooner than was previously possible."
This investment signifies Norway's commitment to enhancing its defensive capabilities in an increasingly volatile global security landscape. By prioritizing the rapid deployment of advanced air defense systems like NASAMS, Norway aims to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its citizens from aerial threats.
The announcement by Kongsberg on March 15, 2024, about receiving financial support from Norwegian authorities and the EU's ASAP program is significant in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The relevance of this development in the context of the war in Ukraine cannot be overstated. Since the onset of the conflict, Ukraine has sought international assistance to bolster its defense capabilities against aerial threats posed by Russian military operations. Air defense systems like NASAMS are critical for Ukraine in protecting its cities, military forces, and critical infrastructure from air attacks.
The financial support from Norwegian authorities and the EU's ASAP (Accelerated Support to Advance Priority projects) program underscores the international community's commitment to assisting Ukraine in its defense efforts. By increasing the production capacity of NASAMS missiles, Kongsberg is not only enhancing its ability to meet the immediate demands of Ukraine but also strengthening the defense posture of NATO allies and partners.
