The 2023 version of the AK-12 was developed following experiences in the Northern Military District, where previous versions (2018 and 2021) had been used. Feedback from these experiences led to new improvements to enhance the weapon's functionality.
Key features of the 2023 AK-12 model include an integrated slotted flash suppressor and a revamped firing mechanism with a two-way safety switch. The new diopter sight, suitable for all weather conditions, is equipped with a reversible rear sight that improves visibility under different lighting conditions. An adjustable cheek rest has also been added to facilitate accurate shooting with optical or night sights. Modifications have been made to the receiver cover mounting system and the architecture of the foregrip. Notably, the single-shot option has been removed.
The AK-12 is a modern evolution of assault rifles designed in Russia, incorporating several improvements over its predecessors. This rifle can use a variety of ammunition, including the 5.45x39mm caliber primarily used in Russia, 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm conforming to NATO standards, as well as 7.62x39mm.
The AK-12 is 945 mm long, but its stock can fold, reducing its length to 725 mm, which facilitates its transport and maneuverability in confined environments, such as during urban operations. The rifle weighs 3.3 kg, a relatively lightweight that contributes to its maneuverability. In terms of rate of fire, the AK-12 is capable of firing between 600 and 1,000 rounds per minute, and it is equipped with a magazine that can hold 30 cartridges.
The rifle is designed for great safety and ease of use with a fire selector located on both sides of the weapon, offering four positions under normal circumstances: safe (S), single shot (1), three-round burst (3), and automatic fire (A). Of course, in this latest model, the single-shot option is no longer available but remains on the standard version.
The AK-12 also offers excellent effective range, reaching up to 625 meters, thanks to a 415 mm long barrel. This range, combined with its accuracy and reliability in various environmental conditions, makes the AK-12 particularly effective for a wide range of military operations. The rifle has been lightened and improved technologically, making its handling more ergonomic and straightforward in combat while retaining the legendary durability and reliability of Kalashnikov weapons.
Alan Lushnikov, president of Kalashnikov Concern, highlighted the continuous improvement of the AK-12, spurred by constant feedback from military personnel. These improvements are part of Kalashnikov's commitment to increasing the weapon's effectiveness, thus aiding soldiers in fulfilling their missions and ensuring their survival.
