Satellite Images Revealed Secret Russian Air Base Emerges near Ukrainian Border.
In the Belgorod region of Russia, approximately 9 km west of the strategic military logistics center of Alexeyevka, construction of a new air base is underway near the Ukraine border, as reported by RedIntelPanda. Online-accessible satellite images reveal significant progress, with runway leveling mostly completed by the onset of winter, and recent developments showing ongoing paving work as of April 29, 2024.

Positioned approximately 9 kilometers west of Alekseyevka, where a logistical center supporting Russian military units is located, the site has been under development since last year. Preparatory work commenced in July 2023, with road construction initiated to facilitate access to the site. By the onset of winter, planning for the future runway was nearly completed, with work resuming in early April after the winter thaw. As of April 27, 2024, the airfield runway is undergoing the installation of the base layer or concrete covering.
The runway, measuring approximately 1800 meters according to some analysts' measurements, is poised to support various aircraft types upon completion. However, speculation arises regarding the nature and purpose of this airport, notably due to its location within a Russian-declared "danger area" for civilian aircraft due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
While Russian information sources have not explicitly reported the construction of a civilian airport at this location, analysis suggests a military application for the airport upon completion. One possible scenario is its use as a fallback location for Russian helicopters, potentially offsetting the reduction in helicopter presence at the Rovenki forward base in Belgorod since late 2023.
The strategic position of Alexeyevka, deeper into Russia but only about 25 km further from the frontlines compared to Rovenki, hints at its potential significance in military operations. Speculations extend to the airport's capability to support not only helicopters but also military transport aircraft such as the AN-26 and Su-25 attack aircraft.
Additionally, Alexeyevka serves as a vital logistical hub for Russia's military efforts in Ukraine, facilitating fuel transport and storage operations. Existing infrastructure, including railway operations and vehicle modification and repair facilities, supports the logistical demands of the region, further bolstering Alexeyevka's strategic importance.
As construction progresses on the new airport, observers anticipate increased activity at Alexeyevka, already a bustling center for the Russian Army's "Zapad Group." The completion of the airport is expected further to enhance the region's significance in military operations.
