Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, expressed delight in strengthening the long-standing relationships with the Spanish Army and the Spanish Air and Space Force through deliveries that will significantly enhance Spain's existing NASAMS capability and further strengthen cooperation between Spain and Norway. The contract signing follows the award notification issued by the Spanish Directorate of Armament, Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM), on April 19 and communicated by KONGSBERG.

The NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is a medium-range air defense system developed by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace in partnership with Raytheon. Initially deployed by Norway in the 1990s, NASAMS is designed to intercept and destroy a variety of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. Utilizing the AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile), this system is known for its modularity, mobility, and easy integration into broader air defense networks.

Current users of the NASAMS air defense system include several countries worldwide. Among them are Norway, the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland, and Lithuania, all of which have integrated this system to bolster their air defense capabilities. Outside Europe, Oman, Indonesia, Australia, and Qatar have also adopted NASAMS for its proven air defense capabilities. More recently, Hungary has joined the NASAMS users, and Ukraine has received this system to strengthen its defense against current aerial threats. Spain was the first international user of NASAMS and has been operating the system for over 20 years. Spanish NASAMS units are currently deployed in the Baltic States as part of NATO's air protection mission.
