The Ukrainian armed forces have received over 50 CV9040s Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) from Sweden, each outfitted with the state-of-the-art Barracuda Thermal Camouflage System. This system enhances the vehicle's stealth capabilities, making it less detectable on the battlefield. The latest iteration of the CV90, developed and produced by the renowned defense contractor BAE Systems, boasts groundbreaking stealth technology and an easy-to-use Vehicle Information System (VIS). This system is built on an open, scalable, and cyber-hardened electronic architecture, ensuring robust cyber defense.
The CV90 IFV is designed for comprehensive battlefield integration, featuring an array of complementary systems. These include a Battlefield Management System, Defensive Aids Suites (encompassing both Hard- and Soft-kill options), Jammer systems, Identification Friend or Foe technology, and proven Anti-Air & Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) capabilities. Such integration facilitates heightened situational awareness and defensive readiness.
In terms of crew comfort and operational efficiency, the CV90 is unparalleled. It boasts an ergonomic, air-conditioned troop compartment that can accommodate up to eight personnel. The vehicle is equipped with both collective and individual Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) protection systems. For enhanced battlefield awareness, the CV90 features direct-view optics and a comprehensive video network. This network includes displays at each crew station and independent sighting systems, providing a 360-degree view of the battlefield.
The deployment of the CV90 in Ukraine represents a significant leap in the nation's defensive capabilities and showcases the cutting-edge advancements in military vehicle technology. With its combination of firepower, protection, and advanced technological systems, the CV90 stands as a formidable asset in Ukraine's ongoing efforts to bolster its defense infrastructure.
The CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) can be equipped with different types of weapon stations, designed to deliver superior firepower on the battlefield. Its primary weapon is typically a 30mm or 40mm automatic cannon, capable of engaging both ground and aerial targets with high precision. Additionally, the CV90 may be armed with anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) for enhanced anti-armor capabilities. The vehicle also includes a coaxial machine gun and grenade launchers, further augmenting its offensive potential. The integration of advanced fire control systems ensures accuracy and efficacy in various combat scenarios.
The CV90 boasts exceptional armor and protection systems, safeguarding the crew and vehicle against a wide range of threats. Its chassis is constructed with advanced composite armor, offering robust protection against ballistic, mine, and IED threats. The vehicle is also equipped with modular armor, allowing for adaptability and increased protection depending on the mission requirements. Additionally, the CV90 incorporates advanced defensive aids suites, which include active protection systems capable of neutralizing incoming projectiles, and state-of-the-art camouflage and stealth technologies, such as the Barracuda Thermal Camouflage System, to reduce detectability.
The CV90 Mk IV, an advanced model in the CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicle series, excels in mobility, a key attribute in modern combat scenarios. Under the hood, it's powered by a robust new engine capable of delivering up to 1,000 horsepower, coupled with the cutting-edge X300 heavy-duty transmission. Despite an increase in the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating from 35 to 37 tons, which accommodates an extra two tons of payload, the CV90 Mk IV retains its remarkable agility, a testament to its well-engineered design.
Mobility is further enhanced by its sophisticated suspension system. The CV90 Mk IV employs a torsion bar suspension, comprising seven dual rubber-tired road wheels on each side, a front drive sprocket, and a rear idler, eliminating the need for track-return rollers. This configuration ensures stability and ease of maneuvering on diverse terrains. An added advantage is the onboard track tension adjusting system that allows the driver to adjust both tracks simultaneously from the driver's seat, optimizing traction and maneuverability.
The CV90 Mk IV's potential is further amplified when equipped with Soucy-type rubber band tracks. These tracks are not only lighter and quieter than traditional metal tracks but also enhance operational range and provide increased protection against fire and mine blasts. The vehicle's top speed reaches an impressive 70 km/h, and it boasts a range of 350 km, ensuring rapid deployment and sustained operational capability in various combat situations. The combination of a high-powered engine, advanced transmission, specialized suspension, and the option for rubber band tracks make the CV90 Mk IV a highly mobile, versatile, and capable vehicle, adept at navigating challenging environments without sacrificing payload capacity or performance.
