This new deal notably includes the KM-SAM Block II system, capable of intercepting both aircraft and missiles, showcasing the collaborative efforts of multiple South Korean defense companies. This capability is especially relevant given the ongoing regional conflicts, such as Saudi Arabia's frequent need to intercept ballistic missiles launched by Houthi rebels from Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has previously turned to South Korea for its defense needs, purchasing Raybolt man-portable anti-tank missiles in 2017, along with electro-optical systems and related ammunition. More recently, in March 2022, the kingdom acquired the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers, which it officially presented by the Saudi MoD for the first time at WDS 2024.

The Chunmoo system, also known as the K239 K-MLRS, demonstrates South Korea's advanced military technology capabilities. Developed by Hanwha Corporation, the Chunmoo was introduced to enhance the artillery firepower of the South Korean military, replacing older systems like the K136 Kooryong. The system's versatility is highlighted by its ability to fire a range of munitions from unguided rockets to precision-guided missiles, making it a formidable asset for various tactical scenarios.

The Chunmoo's unique multi-caliber launch capability allows it to fire 130 mm unguided rockets, 227 mm unguided rockets, and 239 mm guided rockets, with pods mounted on a single turntable for 360° rotation. This flexibility ensures the system can adapt to changing battlefield conditions and mission requirements. Its rapid firing and reloading capabilities, able to launch six 239 mm rockets in 30 seconds and reload two rocket pods in just seven minutes, make the Chunmoo a critical asset for sustained operations.

Significant advancements in Chunmoo's munitions include the development of the 239 mm guided rockets, known as CGR080, which can be equipped with high-explosive penetration warheads or cluster bombs. These rockets are designed to penetrate and destroy fortified structures or disperse bomblets over a wide area, offering versatile engagement options. Efforts are underway to extend the range of these rockets to 200 km, matching the capabilities of North Korea's long-range artillery, and research into a larger 400 mm rocket variant is also being conducted.

The Chunmoo launcher vehicle, based on the K239L 8×8 truck chassis, features an armored cab providing protection against small arms fire and artillery splinters, and offers NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection. Its design and mobility ensure rapid deployability and operational flexibility, essential for modern military operations.

Hanwha Aerospace, a global leader in aerospace and defense, offers a diversified portfolio that includes a range of products and services. Known for its land combat vehicles such as the renowned K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer and the Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the company also specializes in various other weapon systems, munitions, aircraft engine parts, and innovative technology products and services.
