UMEX 2024: Elbit Systems showcases Rook 6x6 UGV integrated with Legion-X system.

At the UMEX 2024 exhibition held in Abu Dhabi, the Israeli company Elbit Systems showcases the Rook Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). Developed in partnership with the Israeli company Roboteam, the Rook UGV was introduced to the public in November 2021. It is part of the Legion-X family of UGVs and leverages the operational experience gained from Roboteam's Probot UGV, which is currently employed by several military forces.

The Rook UGV is a robotic unmanned ground vehicle designed with an open architecture, facilitating easy integration of different payloads and ensuring compatibility with the Interoperability Profile (IOP) standards. Its mobility is supported by a six-wheel frame, a turning circle with a 0-turn radius, and a low center of gravity, enabling it to operate effectively in both close and long-range operations across various environments while carrying substantial payloads.

Operators can remotely control the UGV using an operator control unit equipped with a 7” screen and a user-friendly interface. One of its notable features is its integration with the Legion-X system, enabling it to operate autonomously or as part of a coordinated swarm of multiple unmanned vehicles. The Rook offers dual operational modes, allowing for teleoperation or fully autonomous and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) operations.

Its large loading platform can accommodate payloads of up to 1,200 kg, ranging from equipment and sensors to weapon stations and other essential components. Consequently, the Rook UGV finds applications in various domains, encompassing medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), last-mile logistics, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as deploying remote weapon stations and loitering munitions. It is well-suited for a wide array of combat missions, including urban warfare, battalion maneuvers, and border protection.

In terms of technical specifications, the Rook UGV measures 2.7 m in length, 1.6 m in width, and 1.2 m in height. Its hybrid operation system, which combines internal battery packs and a fuel engine, allows a top speed of 30 km/h, a towing speed of 80 km/h, and the capability to climb vertical grades of up to 60%, with a ground clearance of 24 cm. The UGV can operate continuously for 8 hours, with a hybrid mode available for extended missions, and it possesses an operational range of 1,000 meters. Its communication is facilitated through an IP Mesh data link, and its interfaces are designed to integrate with IOP standard equipment. Additionally, the UGV features visible white LED and IR light for illumination, complemented by a 360° high-resolution real-time day/night video system.
