The 173rd Airborne Brigade, serving as the U.S. Army's contingency response force in Europe, is tasked with providing rapidly deployable forces to the U.S. European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Stationed in Italy and Germany, the brigade regularly engages in joint training exercises with NATO allies and partners. These routine drills aim to strengthen partnerships and enhance the operational strength of the alliance.

Military cooperation between the United States and Sweden has intensified over the years, well before Sweden’s recent accession to NATO in 2023. This collaboration includes the purchase and production of military equipment. For example, Sweden has acquired Patriot air defense systems from the U.S. and collaborated on projects like developing the Stridsvagn 122 combat vehicle, a Swedish variant of the German Leopard 2 tank, incorporating American technologies. Sweden has also bolstered its defense arsenal through its national industry, notably Saab, known for its Gripen fighter jets.

Furthermore, the armed forces of both countries regularly participate in joint exercises such as "Aurora" and "Northern Wind." Sweden's integration into NATO formalizes and amplifies this long-standing cooperation, providing an official framework for joint operations and a stronger collective defense in the Baltic region.

The war in Ukraine has heightened Sweden's regional security concerns, reinforcing its military cooperation with the United States and NATO allies. This collaboration includes joint military exercises aimed at improving interoperability and force readiness. In response to growing threats, Sweden has increased its defense spending to reach 2% of its GDP, in line with NATO's objectives. This commitment reflects Sweden's determination to enhance its defense capabilities and develop its national defense industry, solidifying its role within the transatlantic alliance.
