The contract is part of the Department of Defense's Operational Energy Strategy, which seeks innovative solutions to optimize energy usage and support military operations. Raytheon’s Advanced Technology division will lead the development of advanced wireless power transmitters and receivers, aiming for long-range capabilities tailored to the Army's growing needs for both manned and unmanned systems.
Colin Whelan, President of Raytheon’s Advanced Technology division, emphasized the significance of the project: “Wireless energy and data will enhance operational capabilities in collaboration between manned and unmanned systems. This innovation is particularly crucial in high-risk environments where traditional logistics are challenging.”
Wireless power transmission technology offers numerous advantages for military operations. It reduces the need to transport heavy batteries or fuel, simplifying logistics and extending mission duration. Additionally, it eliminates reliance on fuel depots, which are often vulnerable, by providing a more secure energy infrastructure. This technology also enables energy uniformity across the battlefield, facilitating seamless energy capture and distribution to sensor systems without requiring physical connections.
Raytheon’s expertise in wireless power transmission dates back to the 1960s, when the company set a record for energy transfer efficiency and range. Building on this legacy, Raytheon is now developing cutting-edge solutions to enable long-range wireless energy transmission, with plans to integrate them into future defense systems.
As a leader in defense innovation, Raytheon continues to deliver state-of-the-art solutions for national security. Its extensive portfolio includes integrated air and missile defense, hypersonic weapons, advanced radars, and space-based systems. This new contract further strengthens the company’s contribution to the U.S. Army’s operational readiness and technological advantage.
RTX, Raytheon’s parent company, employs more than 185,000 people worldwide and reported $69 billion in revenue in 2023. Based in Arlington, Virginia, RTX remains a key player in developing defense technologies, aerospace engineering, and integrated systems for clients globally.
This collaboration with the U.S. Army represents another step in Raytheon’s mission to redefine how energy is harnessed and utilized in modern conflicts, paving the way for more agile and sustainable military operations.
