The U.S. Army has awarded an $83.3 million contract to Allison Transmission, an Indiana-based company, for the supply of upgraded and new X1100 transmissions for the main battle tank, Abrams. This announcement strengthens the long-standing relationship between Allison Transmission and the U.S. Army, highlighting the company's expertise in military vehicle transmission systems.

Under this agreement, Allison Transmission will provide these transmissions to both the U.S. Army and foreign military sales customers. This collaboration aims to modernize the Abrams tank fleet by delivering a "zero-mileage transmission" as a crucial component of the Abrams System Enhancement Program. Deliveries are scheduled from this month until December 2024.

The Allison Transmission X1100 Serie transmissions are specially designed for heavy tracked combat vehicles, weighing between 45,359 kg and 63,503 kg (100,000 to 140,000 lbs), equipped with either diesel or turbine engines, with a maximum power of 1,120 kW (1,500 hp). These X1100 Series transmissions feature four forward speeds and two reverse gears. They are based on a cross-drive transmission architecture, integrating braking and steering functions into a robust yet compact unit.

The X1100 Series transmissions offer unparalleled reliability and longevity thanks to advanced technology developed by Allison. They feature fully electronic controls, specially designed for modern engines, powerful hydrostatic steering, and a torque converter with an automatic locking clutch disc, ensuring smooth and efficient operation, even during stop-and-go cycles.
