WDS 2024: Saudi company SAMI conducts live demonstration of 158 Phoenix 6x6 truck.
At the 2024 World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi company SAMI presented a locally-built and licensed version of the Tatra 158 Phoenix 6x6 truck, demonstrating its features and capabilities. This vehicle, with available axle configurations of 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 10x10, has been included in Tatra's lineup since 2011, and was developed in collaboration with the Dutch company DAF Trucks N.V.

The partnership behind the development of the 158 Phoenix truck aimed to combine Tatra's chassis technology, known for its independent swinging half axles suspended by air, with DAF's cabin designs and PACCAR MX engines. This collaboration was intended to enhance the truck's functionality across various applications.
Manufactured in the Czech Republic, the Tatra 158 Phoenix is designed to serve a broad range of uses, offering axle configurations of 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 10x10. This range allows it to cater to both civilian and military sectors. The Phoenix line distinguishes itself from previous models by employing water-cooled PACCAR MX engines that comply with Euro III, Euro V, and Euro VI emissions standards. These engines provide a power output of up to 375 kW (503 hp).
The Phoenix boasts an approach angle of 31°, making it suitable for off-road conditions. Its design and functionality have been recognized in the automotive industry, as seen in its achievements in the European Truck of the Year 2012 competition and at the Silva Regina 2012 exhibit.
The release of the Euro VI vehicles in early 2015 introduced updated cabins with new designs by DAF, available in Day or Sleeper Cab versions, and featured a revised cabin floor for improved interior space. Equipped with ZF 16-speed manual or automated gearboxes, with an option for full automatic gearboxes, the Phoenix is designed to be adaptable to a variety of driving conditions.
The vehicle's chassis maintains Tatra's signature backbone concept, offering high torsional and bending rigidity. This design, coupled with the independent suspension of all wheels, aims to reduce stress on the superstructure and cargo. It also allows for the fitting of various superstructures, making the vehicle versatile across different applications, including civilian, defense, and military applications.
