The Indian-made Bharat Forge Limited MGS (Mounted Gun System) is built around an 8x8 high-mobility military truck chassis, designed for all-terrain operations with enhanced load-bearing capacity and superior stability. This 8x8 platform provides the necessary mobility to transport the 155mm/52 calibre artillery system across diverse terrain, from deserts to mountainous regions, without compromising on speed or responsiveness. The howitzer’s gun system conforms to NATO Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU) standards, allowing it to fire all standard NATO-compatible 155mm ammunition. It achieves a maximum firing range exceeding 42 kilometers with Extended Range Full Bore - Base Bleed (ERFB-BB) rounds and can deliver rapid bursts of 3 rounds in under 30 seconds, along with a sustained firing rate suitable for prolonged engagements.
One of the standout features of the Bharat Forge MGS is its advanced shoot-and-scoot capability, which enables rapid deployment, engagement, and immediate repositioning to evade counter-battery threats. The system is operated using a state-of-the-art Fire Control System (FCS), fully integrated with GPS, inertial navigation, and automated gun-laying technology. This high level of automation ensures precision targeting with minimal manual intervention, significantly improving accuracy and crew survivability.
The system’s design incorporates an armored cabin for the crew, protecting against small arms fire and artillery fragments, while the howitzer itself is remotely operated to reduce exposure in active combat zones. The truck-mounted gun is paired with an automatic ammunition handling and loading system, capable of storing and managing up to 18 rounds onboard. This enables the MGS to operate independently for extended periods and reduces the logistical footprint during combat missions.
Bharat Forge’s development of the MGS reflects India’s growing capacity for indigenous production of high-end artillery systems, building on technologies and industrial experience gained from programs such as the ATAGS. The MGS has undergone rigorous trials across India’s varied operational environments, demonstrating excellent performance in extreme heat, rugged terrain, and high-altitude conditions.
The Bharat Forge 8x8 MGS positions itself as a cost-effective and strategically viable solution not only for the Indian Army’s modernization drive but also for export to friendly foreign nations seeking advanced, mobile artillery capabilities. With modular upgrade potential, local support infrastructure, and a combat-proven base platform, the MGS is poised to become a cornerstone of India's next-generation artillery force structure.
