The
first Borey-class submarine, the Yury Dolgoruky, was commissioned into
the Northern Fleet in January 2013. The fourth-generation Borei-class
sub, with new and improved ballistic missile capabilities, is one of
the eight major projects to be completed by 2020 that aim to form the
core of the Russian Navy's nuclear deterrence strategy over the coming
decades. Designed by the Rubin bureau in St. Petersburg, the Borey class SSBN is 580 feet (170 meters) long, has a hull diameter of 42 feet (13 meters), and a crew of 107, including 55 officers, a maximum depth of about 1,500 feet (450 meters) and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. All the Borey class strategic submarines carry up to 16 Bulava ballistic missiles with multiple warheads. Russia’s first Project 885 Yasen class attack submarine, the Severodvinsk, was handed over to the navy in December 2013. The Severodvinsk is one of eight Yasen-class attack boats ordered by the Russian navy. The second, third and fourth subs of the series, the Kazan ,the Novosibirsk and the Krasnoyarsk, are being built under the updated Project 885M Yasen-M design. The Severodvinsk has a submerged displacement of 13,800 tons, length of 119 meters, speed of 31 knots, and can dive to 600 meters. It has a crew of 90 including 32 officers. Its main armament consists of 24 Oniks (SS-N-26) and Kalibr (SS-N-27) cruise missiles, self-guided torpedoes and mines. |
