Saturn Starts Making All Russian Propulsion Plants for 2 Project 22350 Adm Gorshkov-Class Frigates

Russian manufacturer Saturn, a subsidiary of the United Engine Corporation, started manufacturing all-Russian propulsion plants for the Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, a Saturn employee told TASS on Monday. "We have launched the production of four M55R diesel/gas-turbine propulsion plants to power the two in-construction Project 22350 frigates serialed 923 and 924 (Admiral Golovko and Admiral Isakov respectively)," the source said.

In addition to the Saturn M90FR gas turbine engine with a maximum power of 27,500 hp, the M55R power plant includes the 5,200-hp 10D49 diesel engine from the Kolomna Machinebuilding Plant and the RO55R reduction gearbox.

The Saturn source added that the two diesel/gas-turbine propulsion plants would be the first to be completed in August 2018 to equip the fourth Project 22350 frigate (serial 924). The Northern Wharf Shipyard and the Turborus Close Corporation signed a contract for them in summer this year. Turborus is prime contractor under the program and orders components from Russian manufacturers, including Saturn.

The source explained that Turborus had awarded the contract for the diesel/gas-turbine power plant for the third Project 22350 frigate, the Admiral Golovko, in December 2013. At the time, Ukrainian components were supposed to be used to make it, with the engine to be assembled by Ukrainian manufacturer Zorya-Mashproyekt in the city of Nikolayev. The hardware was slated for delivery to the Northern Wharf Shipyard in September 2016. However, due to the developments in Ukraine and the country’s refusal to supply military-related products to Russia, the deadline has been put off until 2019, and Turborus and the Northern Wharf Shipyard are working out an addendum to the contract. "We are waiting for the addendum to the contract to be released in the near future," the source said.

According to the governmental acquisition website, the cost of the work under the 2013 contract was set at 1.777 billion rubles ($29 million), while it is 2.295 billion rubles ($37.5 million) under the contracted dated June 16, 2015.

Under the agreement between the Northern Wharf Shipyard and Turborus for two M55R diesel/gas-turbine propulsion plants, the manufacturer will make the Metel-55 and Sheksna-90 control systems, VDA-56 vibration monitoring equipment (102 million rubles ($1.6 million) per unit, delivery date - July 2016), 10D49 diesel engine with the Purga control system (108 million rubles ($1.7 million) per unit, delivery date - September 2017), RO55 gearbox, VSM37/M55R transmission (299 million rubles ($4.8 million) per unit, delivery date - December 2017) and M90FR gas turbine engine with transmission elements (593 million rubles ($9.6 million) per unit, delivery date - November or December 2017).

The cost of the work also includes the assembly of the M55R diesel/gas-turbine power plants at a test bench of Saturn at 31 million rubles ($502,000) per unit and the support of the diesel/gas-turbine power plants’ manufacture, assembly and trials priced at 24 million rubles ($400,000). The cost of the bench testing of the propulsion plants, their dismounting and shipping to the Northern Wharf are subject to an additional agreement.

The diesel/gas-turbine propulsion plant to outfit the Project 22350 lead ship, the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, was made by Ukrainian company Zorya, and the one to equip the second ship - the first production-standard frigate, the Admiral Kasatonov - was co-built by Ukrainian and Russian manufacturers.
