The
Spanish Navy said "The 'Patiño' is in its final stage
of readiness. Operational qualification will be held during the month
of January, the vessel will then head to Canada in early February. During
this deployment, the 'Patiño' will take part in different exercises
with naval units Atlantic Canadian waters. Also participating will be
Canadian ships in a multinational exercise organized by the US Navy in
the waters of the US east coast." "Meanwhile, the 'Cantabria' will leave its base in Ferrol in early September to work with the Canadian Navy until late November. Among other activities, it is expected that the 'Cantabria' involved in the exercise 'Cutlass Fury' as part of the Canadian Navy." The Royal Canadian Navy has requested support from the Spanish Navy in the form of supply vessels. This support is based on the principle of solidarity among NATO members, by which a country provides a capability not available to the ally, all without involving additional cost and without entailing a reduction in the operational capabilities of the Spanish Navy . Combat supply ships 'Patiño' and 'Cantabria' main mission is to provided fuel, water, ammunition, supplies and spare parts to a naval force at sea in addition to providing hospital facilities. These vessels can also provide logistical support in non-combat operations such as humanitarian and environmental defense. They also have several capabilities that can develop in a manner similar to that of a ship, such as those relating to maritime safety (control of maritime traffic, visit and search, counter-piracy) or flight operations. |
