The Egyptian Navy took part in the 'Medousa 3/16' naval exercise organized by the Hellenic Navy from 4 - 8 December 2016 in the wider sea area East of Crete island. For this exercise focusing on maritime security operations (VBSS) and search and rescue, the Egyptian Navy participated with some of its most modern units: The Tahya Misr FREMM Frigate and two Ambassador Mk III Fast Missile Craft.
France handed over the FREMM Multi-Missions frigate Tahya Misr (meaning Long Live Egypt) with hull number 1001 to the Egyptian Navy during a ceremony held June 23rd 2015 at the DCNS shipyard of Lorient in Brittany. Egypt became the second FREMM export customer for DCNS following Morocco which commissioned the Mohammed VI frigate in 2014. Multi-mission frigates are versatile vessels able to respond to all types of air, marine, submarine or land threats. FREMM frigates are at the cutting edge of technology and are perfectly suited to ensuring that client navies are able to respond to current threats and the growing needs of maritime security. On June 17 2015, the United States delivered the last two (of four) Ambassador Mk III Fast Missile Craft to Egypt. The stealthy, 550-ton Ezzat class vessels are 207 feet long. They are armed with eight Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles and an OTO Melara 76mm main gun, with self-defense provided by a Rolling Airframe Missile launcher and a Phalanx CIWS Block 1B. The four ships of the class (Ezzat, Zekry, Fahmy and Gad) are powered by three MTU diesels and designed for a top speed of 41 knots. They may operate at sea for up to eight days |
