The third Project 22800 guided missile corvette has been laid down by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «Shipyard «Morye» in Feodosiya, Crimea, according to a TASS correspondent. This has been the shipyard’s first order placed by the Russian Defense Ministry after Crimea acceded to Russia.

"Today, we are laying the keel of the advanced Shtorm ship in keeping with the glorious tradition of Russia’s shipbuilding. This proves that the shipyard has managed to integrate with Russia’s defense industry quickly enough. The company is prepared to fulfil the order," Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said at the keel laying ceremony.

Black Sea Fleet Commander Adm. Alexandr Vitko, Russian Navy Deputy Commander, Armament Vice Adm. Viktor Bursuk and leaders of Crimea’s administration attended the ceremony too.

The Project 22800 Karakurt-class guided missile corvette was developed by the Almaz Design Bureau. She measures 60 m long and 10 m abeam, with a draught of 4 m. Her main propulsion unit is diesel-electric and Russian-made. The ship has a maximum speed of 30 knots, a cruising range of 2,500 nm and an endurance of 15 days. Her armament will comprise a 100-mm or 76-mm versatile automatic gun and the Pantsir-M or Palma air defense missile/gun system. The corvette’s superstructure will house an UKSK eight-cell VLS to accommodate the Kalibr-NK system’s missiles.

Two Project 22800 guided missile corvettes, the Uragan and Typhoon, had been laid down by the Pella Shipyard in St. Petersburg. The lead ship is slated for delivery in 2017 and the other one in 2018. In all, 18 ships in the class are to be built for the Russian Navy - the first seven by Pella, of which three in cooperation with the More Shipyard. In addition, a follow-on order for the series may be placed this year, and the Zaliv Shipyard in the city of Kerch may land the order.
