Russia’s nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky to start undergoing upgrade after 2018
 
Work to repair and upgrade Russia’s Project 11442 heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky to the Project 11442M level will start after 2018, Vice-President for Warship Construction at Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation Igor Ponomaryov said.

"The Project 11442 missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov is being repaired and upgraded at the Sevmash Shipyard [in Severodvinsk in north Russia] in accordance with the schedule," Ponomaryov said. "After the work on the ship Admiral Nakhimov is completed, we will be able to start upgrading the Project 11442 cruiser Pyotr Veliky," he added.

It was reported earlier that the work to repair the cruiser Admiral Nakhimov and equip it with the Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler) missile system would be completed in 2018. The Project 11442 heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky is designed to eliminate key surface targets, attack coastal targets and provide air defense for a ship formation. The Project 11442 missile cruiser is armed with the AK-130 130mm artillery gun, air defense missile complexes, Kortik (CADS-N-1 Kashtan) antiaircraft missile/gun systems and the Vodopad (SS-N-16 Stallion) antisubmarine missile system.

The Project 11442 missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky was put afloat in 1989 and joined the Russian Navy in 1998.

The Project 11442 missile cruiser has a displacement of 24,500 tons, a length of 251 meters, a full capacity of 140,000 hp and a speed of 31 knots. The cruiser’s crew totals 728. The cruiser can carry the Kamov Ka-27 (Helix) helicopter or its versions.
