Russia's Rubin Central Design Bureau Developing "Surrogate" Training Target UUV for Navy

Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering has designed the Surrogat (Суррогат) robotic system that will be used in naval exercises, the design bureau’s press office told TASS. The design bureau is currently discussing this project with Russia’s Navy, the press office added.

"The Surrogate robotic system is equipped with a lithium-ion battery. This submarine simulator can be used in exercises of up to 15-16 hours. During this time, it will simulate maneuvers of a hostile submarine, including at high speeds," the press office said.

"Its length of about 17 meters, which is rather big, and the capacity of carrying towed antennas of various purposes will allow simulating the acoustic and electromagnetic fields of enemy submarines," the press office added.

The Surrogate robotic system has a modular design, which allows it to simulate both diesel-electric and nuclear-powered submarines and conduct mapping and reconnaissance.

"Today, in order to hold an exercise, we have to use operational submarines, thus putting them off their duty. The unmanned simulator will allow us to avoid this and reduce the cost of maneuvers. Moreover, the robotic system reduces risks and makes the environment close to reality," Rubin Design Bureau CEO Igor Vilnit told TASS.

"This system will be easy to operate and less money will be required to service and upgrade it. We are currently in talks with the Russian Navy to fully meet its requirements,"
he added. According to the press office, the Surrogate robotic system may arouse interest of foreign customers.

The Surrogate self-sustained unmanned submarine will have a displacement of about 40 tons, endurance of about 600 miles at a speed of 5 knots, a maximum speed of more than 24 knots and a maximum diving depth of 600 meters.
